@mattbontrager_: Paying off your house is almost always an emotional decision, not a financial one. There's no tax benefit for paying off your primary residence. No return on the capital. Just the feeling of not having a mortgage payment, which for a lot of people is genuinely worth it. But if you have $500,000 sitting there and the question is what to do with it, the honest answer is: it depends on who you are. If you want security, predictability, and the peace of mind of owning your home outright, pay it off. You'll sleep better and that matters. If you're someone who sees opportunity, wants to start a business, or has a real estate investment in front of you, that $500,000 likely does more work deployed than it does eliminating a mortgage payment. Neither is wrong. But one is a financial decision and one is an emotional one. Know which one you're making.
