@drzackmd: The clinical fallout from the Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown medication contamination continues to develop as surviving patients begin rehabilitation. Three patients remain in specialized spinal cord rehabilitation centers, while the most critically injured patient placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) continues long-term intensive care. Sustained intrathecal chemical exposure produces profound chemical neurotoxicity, axonal disruption, and acute flaccid paralysis (Veering et al., 2000). Rebuilding motor and sensory function after caustic neural injury requires months of intensive neuro-rehabilitation and multidisciplinary support. At the federal regulatory level, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Immediate Jeopardy status remains active. The facility must validate and implement comprehensive pharmacy safety corrections by the mandated deadline or face immediate termination of federal healthcare program participation (CMS State Operations Manual, Chapter 3). #DrZackMD #PatientSafety #Anesthesiology #CriticalCare #HealthcareSystems
I live in Chicago, Shirley Ryan is an amazing place if anyone can help her they can, I hope she can improve and I hope the other patients can improve but I’m not sure it will be possible

Will their be charges and a trial for the pharmacy staff involved? Similar to what happened to Radonda Vaught from Vanderbilt?

This is inexcusable. If the hospital wasn’t trying to save money and bought the kits that have the vials of local anesthetic in the kit this would have never happened. 💯 on the hospital and the effort to save a few bucks!!!!

They’re trying their best to keep that ecmo patient alive but to be on the vent all this time is not reassuring 😔

Those poor patients will never be the same. They will most likely need lifetime care. The hospital should pay for all of their care going forward from this event.

The doctors dismissed the females concerns and put them general anesthesia and surgeries were completed. When the males stated their concerns the medicine was stopped immediately and the surgeries canceled. The bias is still an issue in 2026!

and now an Ascension hospital in Milwaukee is experiencing gross contamination of their surgical instruments in the form of black flecks found in "sterile" instrument trays. the issue remains and they are outsourcing their sterilization practices to another facility, canceling surgeries, and sending patients elsewhere for surgery.
Ascension is really not doing too hot rn
