In 1996, Turner and his colleague Billy Joe Brown were convicted of murder and kidnapping. Turner received a sentence of 82 years in prison. Turner always admitted to having helped hide Jennifer's body out of panic and mistaken loyalty, but maintained his innocence about the murder, stating that Brown strangled the victim in a fit of anger. Brown initially blamed both, but in 2002 confessed under oath that he committed the murder alone. Although the conviction for homicide was later annulled and replaced by an accusation of concealment/aid (whose maximum time would be much shorter), Turner remained incarcerated for a decade.
