My wife is the only person at her work that can do several specific tasks ...buuut she has created what she calls The Beer Truck protocol lol. a large 3 ring binder that tells someone how to do her job in case she gets run over by a beer truck lmao

We always call it the bus factor. Some people don't want to share what they know because it increases their bus factor (if I get hit by a bus tomorrow, the company will be screwed). I think some people feel important being the only one who knows how to do something. It makes them indispensable, but is dangerous for businesses and also a weird way to prove your worth in a company.

This is a real thing. I became the Executive Director/CEO for a County wide nonprofit but so many functions were siloed to one person. That was concerning to me so I immediately started cross training and making sure access was not limited to just one person. My gal, Rochelle…she was A/P, A/R, payroll, HR files, etc. SO much. I had her document everything, processes, log ins, etc before she went on vacation. She died on vacation. She is absolutely a human who is irreplaceable, but we were still able to continue to help our clients. This is a real thing to consider.
