🤣🤣🤣🤣 more lies. Gary Brecka does make that claim, but he states it much more absolutely than the science supports. He has said that in Alzheimer’s disease people are “not losing their memory” but rather “losing access” to it.
There is a kernel of legitimate neuroscience behind the idea. Memories are represented by networks of neurons sometimes called engrams, and Alzheimer’s can disrupt the neural circuits needed to retrieve those memories. Experimental research, especially in animal models, suggests that some memories may remain encoded even when normal retrieval becomes impaired.
However, Alzheimer’s is not simply a blocked-access problem. The disease progressively damages synapses and neurons and interferes with encoding new memories, consolidating them, storing them over time, and retrieving existing memories. Modern reviews describe failures across all of those stages.
So a better way to put it is:
Early in Alzheimer’s, some apparent “memory loss” may indeed reflect difficulty accessing memories that are still partly represented in the brain. But as the disease progresses, the underlying neural circuitry and memory representations themselves can deteriorate.
That also helps explain why someone with advanced dementia can unexpectedly remember a song, recognize someone, or recall an old event after seeming unable to do so for months. That does not prove that every apparently lost memory is intact and merely “blocked.”
So I would rate Brecka’s statement as partly based on real neuroscience, but substantially overstated. Saying “Alzheimer’s patients never lose memories; they only lose access to them” is not scientifically established.
