Aguleri and Umuoba-Anam: The History Behind the Mainland Settlement. The Aguleri leadership made land available for Umuoba-Anam to settle on the mainland in July 1910. HRH Igwe Raphael Anakwuba Idigo II as the ruler who permitted the community to establish its settlement at Otuocha/Amaeze. This history deserves commendation in any discussion about the relationship between the two communities. Umuoba-Anam existed as an Anam community before its mainland settlement. Its migration history records a movement from across the Anambra River to the mainland , while some of its people remained at Aboegbu-Anam. This move marked the establishment of a new home provided by Aguleri community. How settlement began This is the centre of that settlement arrangement. HRH Raphael Idigo II became Igwe of Aguleri in February 1910 and permitted Umuoba-Anam to settle at their present location in July of that year. “In July 1910 he allowed the people of Umuoba Anam to settle at Otu-Ocha Aguleri Land”. So , Umuoba-Anam’s mainland settlement involved permission from Aguleri’s leadership. The evidence of a land transaction There is also a historical account of Umuoba-Anam paying Aguleri seven cows, 800 yams and 800 fish as a thank you to the host community for their hospitality and being supportive in providing the settlement . Ogbe-Awusa Axis In an inspection on 15 June 2026, the Anambra State Government described the land there as disputed between Aguleri and Umuoba-Anam and announced a fact-based investigation. That report records a finding of ownership. What Was Observed During the visit, a house at Ogbe House was pointed out, and the Igwe of Umuoba-Anam was asked who owned it. He replied that the house belonged to him. He was then asked who sold the land to him, and he said that he bought it from an Aguleri man. What Was Stated Following his response, it was stated that buying land from an Aguleri person does not make the land part of Umuoba-Anam community. It was also stated during the visit that the land agreement in question had a limited term and that, once that term expired, the land would revert to the original owner. The necessary questions were answered . What land did the original arrangement cover? What rights did the parties agree to transfer or recognise? What boundaries did they identify? An original agreement, reliable witness record, survey plan as well. A relationship larger than the land dispute The relationship between Aguleri and Umuoba-Anam also includes education and religious life. The diocesan history of St Augustine’s Parish states Umuoba-Anam pupils attending schools in Aguleri. In 1936, a school block within St Raphael’s Infant School, Aguleri, served more than 80 Umuoba-Anam pupils. These records show connections that extended beyond land transactions. That shared History deserves preservation alongside the settlement History . But , unfortunately, that age-old relationship was badly damaged by a sacrilegious act committed by the people of Umuoba-Anam against the people of Aguleri Ancient Kingdom. It was an act of abomination against Aguleri, who gave them water when they were thirsty, food when they were hungry, and land on which to settle when they needed a place to call home. In days , weeks, years to come, Aguleri Ancient Kingdom will still demand an explanation from Umuoba-Anam: why did they do what they did? We deserve to know why they turned against a community that has protected and accommodated them since 1910, ensuring that they could live within and around us by providing land for their homes, even when doing so was a difficult decision. A sacrilege has been committed. The same HRH Igwe Raphael Anakwuba Idigo II, Igwe of Aguleri, who, out of his benevolence, permitted Umuoba-Anam in July 1910 to settle and use the land they occupy today on the mainland, was the same traditional ruler. #fypシ゚viral #aguleri #anam
