It all went out the window when welders started rolling out the job on each other. Not sticking together. Not having each others backs when another gets screwed over or not paid by a company. We’re all divided. When I left 798 in 2011. It was almost the same non union. Everyone looked out for each other. Now. If you have to finish a weld that takes an extra 10 minutes. The whole job site will leave your ass there. It’s really sad. Etiquette and brotherhood is gone.

Hot take, back in the day welders were the supers/upper management and knew what it took to do the work now it’s nothing but bean counters who believe they’re cutting cost In the right areas and it all rolls down onto the hands taking it on the chin

yall need to stick together and get organized we just got another 8 dollar raise in gas distribution in michgain we will be mid 50s, 19-23 on rig and 160 a day. thats the minimum many contractors are pay well over that. I know everyone hates at word union but ill be retired by time im 58 with a pension and 401k

I think that it has to do with these producers are low balling every service company no matter how good they are they beat the prices down and the service companies have to take the hit in order to continue working and keeping the light on. It also has to do with so many smaller companies bringing the daily rates and the oil companies playing the game. just my opinion. been doing it for a while and in South Texas it is a hard game to play. Makes it hard on us guys that know how to do it pull our hair out just to keep above water.

Well when the small shops try to charge more for the company labor. The competition keeps their numbers down. So we have to complete with Whoes hungry. And that’s why little shops can’t pay more.

you right I know one thing im a combo hand from 95 to now if I knew welding was going this way fitter gets a helper the welder get no helper then pull your own leads an grind your own stuff I think I would been a nascar driver lol you right

once you make say 250.000 a year, you will strive to continue that level even if it requires extra. I saw that in the 80s when wages were cut 50percent.

Wages stay the same way because there are too many financially ignorant men and women in the trades, who are debt motivated, buying things out of their tax bracket because it’s what they think they have to do to be successful. Then they get so far in over their heads, a couple divorces, whatever, and then become too dependent on their income that they become job scared, being job scared is the number 1 cause of the stale rates that these companies can charge, because there will always be someone who will take the low paying job, simply because they have no other option. If you’re financially free, and able to make decisions unclouded by finances, you will become unstoppable.

Everything he said, and I will add the workers in the industry not sticking together one purpose / one goal. Understanding not sticking together hurts everyone. Right to work laws benefit the corporations while at the same time ensuring wages and benefits stay low. Solidarity is the only way to make a better change. There's a reason why corporations, and the military have unified structure. The only way to be successful across the board is to move as one. United you stand divided you fall, this is a statement that has remained true throughout time, and the workforce should be no different.
