@gringoenguate: Look at all of this trash along Guatemala’s Caribbean coastline. 🇬🇹🌊 Much of this waste originates upstream, from Guatemala City and other municipalities where inadequate waste management and illegal dumping allow trash to enter our rivers. One of the major pathways is the Río Las Vacas, which receives enormous amounts of waste from the Guatemala City metropolitan area before joining the Río Motagua. From there, the Motagua carries waste hundreds of kilometers toward the Caribbean, where currents and waves eventually push much of it onto our coastline. But what you see in these photos is only part of the problem. The water itself carries contamination from untreated wastewater, agricultural runoff, and other pollutants. This isn't simply a trash problem, it's a watershed and water-quality problem. Government, municipalities, businesses, and citizens all have a responsibility. Accountability needs to exist across both the public and private sectors, but we also need investment in waste management, wastewater treatment, recycling, education, and prevention upstream. Guatemala is an incredibly beautiful country, blessed with rivers, lakes, mountains, and coastlines. It is unfortunate to see so many of these natural resources affected by pollution.
