When the Sheriff was talking to John about Hal being lonely and not being fearful, my first thought was "He's a Green Lantern for the galaxy, and THE Green Lantern for Earth. Of course he's going to be lonely, and y'know how brave you have to be to CHOOSE to be alone? I have a theory that in this universe, Carol and Hal have actually been together for some time, and Hal was actually planning on retiring, but then during Sinestro's defection from the GLC, he attacked Earth and Carol got caught in the crossfire, so he's still mourning the loss of her, but Sheriff Kane reminds Hal of Carol, which is why he's flirting with her and responded when Kane called to her husband during the town hall meeting, getting caught up in the moment and remembering how Carol used to call him that when he got distracted with his GL duties while not actively out and about in space or somewhere on Earth.
