When we respond to behavior with reminders after it happens, we’re basically teaching kids that nothing really happens when they break a rule. And they pick up on that fast. So then you’re stuck in this loop of
“Hey guys… remember…”
“Don’t forget…”
“Guys…”
over and over again… and it’s exhausting. And the hard part?
You’re not doing anything wrong. You’re trying to be kind. You’re trying to get the class back on topic. But it ends up making your voice matter less instead of more. What actually works better (and feels way calmer honestly) is this: When a rule is broken, you just… follow through.
Quick, neutral, no big speech, no extra reminders. Then you move on. That’s it. It doesn’t mean you’re mean. It just means kids know you mean what you say. And once they know that, everything in your classroom gets easier.
