children can also just be really funny about it sometimes. a few weeks ago I saw one of my nephews that I haven't really seen sinds I became a wheelchair user. he was so interested in what was going on and why I use it, at one point he seriously asked "but can't you just learn to walk?" it cracked me up, no buddy I can not "just" learn to walk🤣

when I was diagnosed with cancer, I decided I was going to tell my students in an age-appropriate way what was going on so that they would understand the physical changes and my frequent absences. I told them that they could ask me any question they wanted and that because it was stuff about my body and my health, if they asked me something that I wasn't comfortable answering I would just say "that's something that I don't feel comfortable answering." and that if I said that, they should know that that was okay that they asked it. I wasn't going to be upset that they asked me something that was too personal. and that they could feel free to ask me other questions.
