Walnut Blasting a Diesel Intake | Opel 1.6 CDTi. • This is Part 2 of the intake system cleaning on an Opel Meriva B equipped with the 1.6 CDTi diesel engine. In Part 1, we removed the intake system and discovered severe carbon buildup caused by years of EGR operation. The intake manifold, intake ports, and valves were heavily restricted by carbon deposits, reducing airflow and affecting engine performance. • Now it’s time for the most important stage of the repair - complete intake system cleaning. Every removable component is thoroughly cleaned by hand until it returns to its original condition. These areas are cleaned using a walnut blasting system, which works similarly to sandblasting but uses crushed walnut shells instead of abrasive sand. This method safely removes carbon deposits without damaging the engine components. • One critical rule must always be followed during walnut blasting. Before cleaning each intake port, the intake valves for that cylinder must be completely closed. After finishing one cylinder, the crankshaft is rotated until the valves of the next cylinder are fully closed before continuing.
