It’s a neurodivergent behaviour. Because some people who are neurodivergent have to develop their social skills a lot more than neurotypical people they tend to use their own experiences to relate to other people as a way to show they understand what they are going through.

Emm :
I understand the neurodivergent relating (I do it too). But when I told my friend that my partner died…she said “sorry” and then related it to her dog dying and how much she missed her dog. Now I’ve lost a couple of dogs in my life. I understand the pain… for me it does not compare and felt so insensitive… I felt like it became “can you believe it’s been X years since (dogs name) died’ and not… “omg your partner died 14 days ago? That’s horrible”.

Clothes Lover :
People hate it when they say something bad happened to them, and the other person says, “ me too.!” it can feel so insensitive because you just want someone to listen empathy instead of turning it around to them! They don’t realize what they are doing-they are attempting to relate.
