@fkndeliciousness: At first glance, this looks completely insane. A table full of food, incense, fruit, maybe even cash… and then suddenly people rush in and start grabbing everything. It can look like the ceremony just turned into a robbery. But this is giật cô hồn, and the part most foreigners miss is that the grabbing can actually be part of how the offering ends. Once the ritual is finished, some of those offerings are intentionally released and given away. That’s very different from taking something that was never offered in the first place. In the new Vietnam Culture Explained episode, I break down what giật cô hồn actually is, why people take the offerings, and where the line between tradition and straight-up stealing really sits.
