my solo hike up Helvellyn yesterday ⛰️ & first full day to myself since having Luca 8 months ago 🤍 18 months ago I’d have gone straight up Striding Edge, but yesterday I chose the safer route… especially with snow & ice forecast. Maybe it’s more responsibility with a baby… or maybe I’m just getting older and more sensible 🤪 Either way, there’s no shame in taking an easier route or turning back if you need to! Some tips if you’re heading into the mountains: • Check the forecast: MWIS, Met Office, Mountain Forecast
• Tell someone your plan: Route, start/finish and update them if it changes
• Map & compass: Carry them and know how to use them (book a nav course if unsure)
• Offline maps: Komoot, OS Maps, AllTrails + carry a power bank
• Emergency: Dial 999 → ask for Police → Mountain Rescue
• EmergencySMS: Text REGISTER to 999 before you go (could be a lifesaver with poor signal)
• What3Words: So helpful for explaining your exact location
• Whistle distress signal: 6 short blasts → 1 min pause → repeat
(Reply = 3 short blasts → pause → repeat)
• Layer up: Waterproofs, warm mid-layer, hat & gloves, even in summer
• Food & water: More than you think you’ll need
• Essentials: Headtorch, first-aid kit, whistle, survival bag/bivy
• Watch weather & time: If conditions worsen, simplify your route
• Stick to paths in poor visibility
• Know your limits & trust your gut… if something feels off, it probably is! #soloadventure #helvellyn #lakedistrictuk
