When we see packaging like this in the supermarkets, we need to realise that these health claims are marketing tactics designed to encourage us to buy more, and while the claim they’re making is often correct, it doesn’t give us the overall picture of what’s in the product! The term for this is “Health Halos”. Health Halos are marketing techniques used on food packaging to give the impression that a product is healthier than it actually is. These “halos” rely on buzzwords, imagery, or claims that highlight a single positive aspect of the product, such as “low fat,” “high protein,” “sugar free,” while distracting from less healthy elements like added sugars or artificial additives. Like this high protein granola in Aldi! The big “Protein” title on the front of the pack distracts us from looking at the overall quality of this product! But when you look beyond this health halo and look at the ingredients and nutritional info you see that: A) It doesn’t have quality ingredients that you’d want in a granola - ie lots of nuts and seeds - which would give you lots of important nutrients. B) It contains more sugar than protein. If this food label was honest it would be called “PROTEIN & SUGAR GRANOLA” !!! A much better quality granola which has only slightly less protein and significantly MORE fibre per serving is the Kavanagh’s Double Oat Granola! It doesn’t have a bright fancy pack like the protein granola has but it is a much better quality product and in my view is a much better swap 👌 Have you tried either of these granola’s?
