I live in SE Kansas (Oswego the county seat). We moved here from Oklahoma City because my grandparents lived here and we liked the quiet after the city. We live in the country. Most of the population is farmers who live outside of the towns. They are the prosperous one. Land used to be fairly cheap but it's gone from around 1000/acre to 5000/acre. We are only an hour from Joplin, so most of our health care comes from there. We're 2 hours from Tulsa and Kansas City so we go there for more complicated procedures. The crime is mainly a drug problem of the low income

A lot of these towns in Southeast Kansas want to charge 11% property taxes and 10% sales tax and have absolutely nothing to offer. We moved down here and travel to Kansas City. We’re getting ready to leave because we’re tired of getting taxed to death for nothing.

You forgot to mention that Weir is near West Mineral, KS and Big Brutus, the world’s largest electric coal shovel. At 16-stories tall, Big Brutus is the world’s largest surviving electric shovel. From the road, or even the museum nearby, it’s difficult to judge the size of Big Brutus, because it sits in a 20′ deep pit. Big Brutus is located in Cherokee County, and has never crossed north into Crawford County. Being a 30 minute drive from both Downtown Pittsburg and Downtown Girard, and sitting on the same coalbed with shared history, it is asked about frequently. Big Brutus’s bucket is large enough to hold a car. During its 10-year lifespan, it dug the equivalent of the Panama Canal from where it sits in Southeast Kansas to the Mississippi River. Now on the National Historic Register of Places, young or old, Big Brutus is a must see. Credit: Explore Crawford County.

it was a producer of clay bricks at that time, coal and zinc was way before the time you mentioned. the Simones grocery store kept it alive, once it closed the town pretty much went to crap.

I grew up by Brutus went to school in Columbus had family in Weir on the East out skirts Thanksgiving every year at uncle Bill &aunt Norma Jesse (Hale) great memories and very blessed times.
