@generationvhs80: 60 years ago this week, Star Trek began its journey. But in 1982, it gave us what may still be its greatest movie. STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. After Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Paramount wanted another movie, but something different. Enter producer Harve Bennett and director Nicholas Meyer. Bennett went back and watched the original television series and found the perfect unfinished story in the 1967 episode “Space Seed.” What ever happened to Khan? That question helped give us one of the greatest science-fiction sequels ever made. Nicholas Meyer then helped take Star Trek in a different direction. The Enterprise suddenly felt less like a vehicle simply exploring space and more like a ship at sea. There was tension. Strategy. Battles. Revenge. Aging. Friendship. Sacrifice. And yet somehow, it still felt completely like Star Trek. Then there was Ricardo Montalbán. KHAAAAAAAN!!! Released in June 1982, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan became a hit and helped breathe new life into the franchise. More than four decades later, many fans still consider it the standard every Star Trek movie has to measure itself against.
