this almost sounds like what happened between Netflix and Blockbuster Video when Netflix tried to sell their company to Blockbuster and Blockbuster said who's going to buy or rent videos / DVDs through the mail and then a few years later Blockbuster started closing stores left and right and Netflix turned into an online streaming giant that we know today

Borders let the wolf into the henhouse, and Bezos took it to the next level. Borders, Sears, Toys “R” Us, Circuit City, RadioShack, CompUSA, hhgregg, Linens ’n Things, Bed Bath & Beyond—the list goes on and on. Amazon changed retail forever, and the companies that didn’t adapt got run over.

It's because in 2001, there were no tablets or smartphones. Around 2007, smartphones emerged, and the internet was in our hands 24/7. Ever since, things have been changing daily and very fast. If you don't keep up, you will be far behind in few months.
