![One of San Diego’s most legendary neighborhood restaurants may be nearing the end of the road. The Big Kitchen Café, the beloved South Park breakfast institution run for more than four decades by Judy “The Beauty on Duty” Forman, is facing serious financial problems, equipment failures and declining business, with a longtime employee warning SanDiegoVille that the restaurant may not survive without immediate help. “Big Kitchen seems to be on its last legs and I do not see it being open any longer sadly,” the employee told SanDiegoVille. A new GoFundMe is seeking $14,000 to help keep the restaurant operating, pay staff and address mounting expenses. As of this weekend, it had raised just $415 from five donors. According to the employee, Big Kitchen was forced to temporarily close about three months ago after costly problems emerged inside the aging café, particularly with refrigeration equipment. The disruption reportedly worsened existing financial difficulties and left the business behind on expenses, including employee payroll. “We the staff from Big Kitchen were okay with that, but after these months and a drop in customers [we] can no longer help keep the restaurant open like we would prefer,” the employee wrote. SanDiegoVille has not independently reviewed the restaurant’s financial or payroll records. The fundraiser itself says rising food costs, unexpected medical emergencies and other financial challenges have made keeping the doors open increasingly difficult. But Big Kitchen isn’t just another struggling restaurant. Forman took over the tiny Grape Street diner in 1980 after moving to San Diego from Detroit, transforming what PBS later described as a neighborhood greasy spoon into a “community sanctuary for social justice and activism.” For decades, the café has served as an unofficial community center for artists, activists, politicians, members of San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community and countless neighborhood regulars. Meals were sometimes bartered for work, fundraisers were organized from the restaurant and customers could linger over communal coffee for hours. In 2009, the City of San Diego proclaimed June 29 “Judy ‘The Beauty’ Forman Day” in recognition of her contributions to the community. And before she became an EGOT-winning international celebrity, Whoopi Goldberg reportedly washed dishes at The Big Kitchen while involved in San Diego’s theater scene. The café’s walls remain packed with decades of political signs, photographs, memorabilia and pieces of San Diego history, creating the kind of eccentric, intensely personal restaurant increasingly disappearing from the city. This also isn’t Big Kitchen’s first recent financial crisis. In May 2025, SanDiegoVille reported on another fundraiser launched after Forman suffered serious health and financial problems, including a heart attack following the pandemic and tax issues. More than a year later, the situation appears even more precarious. There is an unfortunate symmetry to the crisis. Forman spent decades operating a restaurant where conventional business rules often came second to helping people. Now the people who work there are asking San Diego to return some of that generosity. For nearly half a century, artists found friends there. Activists organized there. Politicians shook hands there. Whoopi Goldberg washed dishes there. And Judy Forman turned breakfast into an excuse to build a community. Now, after 46 years of feeding San Diego, The Big Kitchen is asking whether San Diego will help keep its doors open. The Big Kitchen Café is located at 3003 Grape Street in South Park.
