I think people sometimes forget that it was more than just the hospitality. At that point, nobody knew what was happening. They didn’t know if those other planes were safe and if they weren’t, if there was an attack or a bomb or something there would be far fewer casualties here knowing that Canadians took that risk and treated them with kindness and hospitality.

Our town of Gander almost doubled in size - population was about 9,000 and Gander welcomed 7,000 stranded passengers 💕💕

I live in Detroit and when I say Dearborn was so shook and scared of the backlash of something they didn’t do was sad. Kids stopped going to school for a long time bcuz parents were afraid.

As a native Newfoundlander, thank you for the shoutout. Not only should we never forget the tragedy of 9/11 but the humanity displayed by the people of Gander and surrounding communities. Truly one of Canada’s finest hours. Rest assured, if a similar tragedy were to happen today despite current political climate aside, nothing would change, it’s about people helping people, Newfoundlanders are like that. 🇨🇦

Gander only had a couple of small hotels. Plane people were taken into locals' homes and treated like family. There were Make A Wish children on their way to Disney World. The Gander grade 12's took them horse back riding, river rafting, bowling, quad rides and had a big party for them at the gym. The Make A wish kids said it was better than Disney.

I am a retired Firefighter/Paramedic in Canada and I remember being at work watching the TV that morning. Within 2 days, members of our department were asked by the IAFF to pride a list of volunteers who may be requested to help relieve Firefighters in the US. 90% of our department signed up. In the end, we were not required, but we were there if needed. I am embarrassed for your President and how he is treating all those "allies" who were there for the US post 911.

I remember watching it live on TV when I was in high school. The whole country came to a grinding halt and was watching in horror. I also remember thinking immediately that we (Canada) we're going to war because it wasn't even a consideration that we weren't going to jump in the fight with the USA, the default was, LETS GO!!. And we did. We went into Afghanistan and proudly fought right in alongside you and lost many of our own. Plenty of other historical examples we can site as well. Prior to Donald Trump, we never felt like we even had to say that we did these things because we are a proud and modest people and aren't looking for a pat on the back for doing the right thing. Its been exhausting and frankly demoralizing to have to remind and say to Americans that we did these things, proudly, to help our friends in the USA in there time of need (include wildfires and natural disasters too). I really hope America saves itself before the house of cards comes down.

Many of them had “the plane people” stay with them, others stayed in legions, schools, churches etc. People donated food, clothes, personal items, took care of the animals that were on some of the planes (including two chimpanzees), cooked for them, and entertained like newfies do, and they truly landed in the most wholesome part of Canada and the best place they could be at the time.

As a Canadian, I want to Gander last year for the first time. So small. 3 hotels. Well 2.5 actually. It’s reamarkable what they did. Really remarkable.

They were brilliant… especially loved the quick thinking. What to do with all the food donations coming from all over of province of Newfoundland! They stored all the fresh food right on the ice at the hockey arena❤️❤️
