It's often seen that being overweight is beneficial for longevity in older adults. However, that's mostly because excess body fat can compensate for the dangers of low muscle mass to a certain extent. When you control for skeletal muscle mass, the apparent survival advantage of being overweight is greatly reduced and the lowest mortality is seen at a more normal BMI range The real problem in older adults is sarcopenic obesity - low muscle + high body fat. For adults over 60, the hierarchy appears to be: 1. Normal or low body fat + high muscle mass 2. Higher body fat + higher muscle mass (or excess fat with normal muscle) 3.
