THE QUINSY UPDATE 🏔️🩺 He made it through the night and saw the doctor at the medical centre on the mountain first thing this morning. And in a ridiculous twist of fate… the doctor working at the ski resort happened to be one of my fellow emergency medicine specialists 😂 She confirmed that yes, it was a peritonsillar abscess (quinsy), drained it there and then, started treatment, and he’s now on his way home down the mountain 🙌🏻 A little context after the MANY “CALL AN AMBULANCE” and “WHY DIDN’T YOU DRIVE TO HIM?!” comments on my last video… I didn’t call an ambulance because, based on how he was when I last spoke to him, I didn’t think he was in an immediate or impending airway emergency. He was breathing normally, able to speak to me and hadn’t rapidly deteriorated. Had that changed, I absolutely would have called one. Turns out the reason he had stopped texting me back was because he had fallen asleep! 🤦‍♀️ And I couldn’t just jump in the car and drive to him. He was halfway up a mountain that I couldn’t access in the middle of the night, three and a half hours away, while I had two sleeping preschoolers at home. Also, despite being an emergency doctor, I’m considerably less useful without an emergency department around me 😂 I don’t have IV antibiotics, steroids, analgesia or airway equipment sitting in my kitchen cupboard. **Please don’t take our decision to wait until morning as general medical advice. A severe sore throat with difficulty swallowing saliva, breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening symptoms needs urgent medical assessment** But thankfully, in this particular story, the mountain patient survived 🥰🏔️ @Timthestayathomedad ❤️
