@thatdeafamily: Before sending her to school for the first time after 3 years of homeschooling, I had to remind Ev to self-advocate. ❤️ When she asked for pen and paper, I was actually proud of her because she knew how to communicate with hearing people in a way that worked for her. BUT at the same time… I feel frustrated. 😩 Why should she have to figure out how to communicate on the bus? The bus should already have full communication accessibility for her. That shouldn’t be her responsibility. She’s just a little girl. 🥺 Yes, I want her to learn how to self-advocate. But I also want the adults around her to make sure she has access to communication in the first place. Accessibility should not depend on a Deaf child having to figure it out herself. #deaffamily #family #asl

My son was nonverbal until 4. Sending him to preschool was SO scary bc I was SO afraid they wouldn’t understand him. My mama heart identifies with your worry. 💜
