With an extraordinary 1,663 career victories, he became the winningest jockey in Jamaican racing history and the English-speaking Caribbean. “Fanna” was crowned Jamaica’s champion jockey five times, dominating the sport for four consecutive years from 1978 to 1981 before returning to the top in 1995. He also captured a record 44 Jamaican Classic victories, including an unmatched 11 Derby triumphs. In 1981, Griffiths partnered with the outstanding Royal Dad to capture Jamaica’s Triple Crown, the first ever achieved at Caymanas Park. His legendary partnership with champion trainer Philip Feanny later produced a historic run of Classic victories that earned international recognition. In 1993, Griffiths became the first Jamaican racing personality to reach 1,000 victories at Caymanas Park. His brilliance, patience, tactical intelligence and distinctive “fanning” riding style made him a favourite among racing supporters and earned him the unforgettable nickname “Fanna.” A Jamaican Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame inductee and recipient of the Order of Distinction, Griffiths represents excellence, dedication and longevity.
