@science: Give a child two nearly identical activities — one where their work gets thrown away, one where it gets saved — and something as small as "this will be kept" is enough to make them choose the harder, more productive task every time.   Researchers Yilin Liu and Fan Yang ran four separate studies totaling 604 children aged 4 to 9 and 582 adults, testing how much a sense of lasting significance influences whether someone chooses effortful, productive activity over something effortless and immediate. Across every study, participants of all ages strongly preferred creating artwork that would be saved over an equivalent activity with no lasting existence at all — even when the difference in stakes was genuinely tiny.   The preference held up under multiple twists on the setup: it applied whether the task was a one-time activity or something repeated, and it was specific to actually creating something — simply watching art being made didn't trigger the same effect.   The most surprising result came when researchers pitted significance against pure enjoyment. Yang admitted the team expected a genuinely fun task might fully substitute for meaning — but enjoyment only partially compensated for a lack of lasting impact, never fully closing the gap. In other words, a task being fun and a task actually mattering appear to satisfy two separate psychological needs, not one.   The researchers frame this as evidence that the human need to feel like our actions have lasting worth — what psychologists call "mattering" — isn't a sophisticated adult concept layered on top of childhood. It's foundational, showing up as early as researchers have been able to test for it.   source: Liu, Y., & Yang, F. (2026).
