Jinshi was also SA’d numerous times, most notably when he was 13y, so Maomao being the only one who doesn’t look at him w lust is very refreshing. There is also her intelligent and mysterious mind and the fact she’s not that ‘polished’ and he can be (sometimes) a silly teenager w her, which he wasn’t ever allowed to.

He wanted to seduce her, mostly because she seemed useful to him. Later he found her intelligent, caring, smart and interesting. Major shift is most noticeable when he gives her his hairpin. I think when they talk about her freckles he feels sorry for her situation, means he cares for her. Another reason might be how Maomao threats Jinshi. To her his beauty doesn't make her treat him differently, to her he is the most beautiful man in the world, but it isn't all about him. He likes him more after he starts to act like caring and capable man

Don't forget Maomao isn't the most honest person to herself. Especially if it relates to someone she is close to and in a wildly different sociopolitical bracket. As soon as she feels like she is too close to danger she dismisses, disengages, and disappears. She really doesn't feel ok being reliant or too familiar with someone like Jinshi, and even more so after realizing there are secrets to him that are dangerous if she simply acknowledged them existing. However, she like any cat is warming up to him over time and subtly letting herself be attached to him as she accepts that he isn't a threat to her. And while Jinshi is aware of most of this (just not that she is into him), it lets him be assured that it is possible. But Maomao is very delicate for something so durable and can still be hurt or driven off by Jinshi if he does something wrong or even bad. Just like any cat would

I don't know why but the way Jinshi constantly bugs Maomao is really offputting to me. I started season 2 so I'm probably missing something but I almost feel annoyed for Maomao everytime he pops up.

it is the classic anxious-avoidant dynamic. Jinshi is deep down insecure and doesn't believe in the love other people give him but He believes love need to be earn so He finds in MaoMao a person who He needs to earn his love so he feel attracted. MaoMao is a avoidant and she doesn't trust people who show love that's why she withdraw which only makes Jinshi to try harder

Marmalade also lets him play into a side he probably wasn't allowed to - he enjoys teasing and joking around with her and anyone who's in a good relationship will know that's probably one of the most stand out important elements which is humour and because everyone else is either respectful to Jinshi due to his title or swooning over him because of his looks, Maomao lets him have fun and jokes and gets a more authentic response from her.
