No one would dispute the fact that the heart is one of the most important organs in our body. Every minute, it pumps blood through thousands of kilometers of blood vessels, supporting the function of the brain, muscles, internal organs, and immune system. The cardiovascular system became one of the key innovations that allowed animals to increase in size, become more active, and adapt to a wide variety of environments. Without an efficient transport system for oxygen and nutrients, complex nervous systems, high metabolic rates, and active lifestyles would not have been possible. However, like everything in our bodies, the heart is not perfect.
