Organizing a drum circle at the beach every week is a unique blend of chaos, creativity, and community. There’s a lot more to it than just showing up with some drums and good vibes. We arrive ahead of time to stake out the right spot, one with enough room for the circle, yet still inviting enough for bystanders to gather. On super crowded days this is challenging but with the help of the community it works 🥰. The beach environment itself is unpredictable; wind, sand, and tide conditions can throw curveballs. Then there’s the gear, drums, seating, even some torches to keep the vibe going after sunset. Just like our bonfires, setting the stage requires precision and foresight. This is where it gets really interesting. Each week brings a different mix of personalities. Some folks are seasoned drummers who thrive in the rhythm, while others are curious tourists or locals just looking for a good time. Managing that blend requires reading the room (or beach) and knowing how to guide the energy. Some nights, the group might lock into a hypnotic groove; other nights, it’s more like herding cats. There’s a delicate balance in leading versus letting things flow naturally. Too much direction, and it feels stiff. Too little, and it’s just noise. Finding that groove where everyone contributes without overpowering one another, that’s the magic. Big thanks to our regulars who help set the tone, acting like informal leaders without even realizing it. The wild card each week can be anything, a random drunk guy who thinks he’s a master percussionist, a couple of kids who steal the show with their energy, or that one local with a didgeridoo who shows up at just the right moment. Sometimes these surprises add magic; other times, they throw everything off balance. After all the energy’s been spent, there’s still the less glamorous task of packing everything up, shaking sand out of gear, hauling drums back to the car, and making sure the space is cleaner than when you found it. By that point, we’re exhausted, but there’s something deeply satisfying about knowing you helped create an experience that people will remember. It’s not just about the music, it’s about connecting people. Someone might come to the circle feeling stressed or lonely, and by the end of the night, they’re dancing, laughing, or even finding a sense of belonging.
