@iamjosephofgh: How many of you remember Lieutenant General Winston Mensa-Wood, one of the most prominent Ghanaian military officers of the PNDC era? Born on 10 November 1940 in Cape Coast, Mensa-Wood attended Ghana National College, where he completed his West African Schools Certificate in 1961. He later received military training in the United Kingdom and at the V. I. Lenin Military-Political Academy in the Soviet Union. His military career took him into some of the most important positions in Ghana. In January 1982, while serving as a colonel, he was appointed by the PNDC to head the Cocoa Evacuation Task Force. The task force was established at a time when large quantities of cocoa were reportedly stranded in parts of the country because of poor roads and inadequate transportation. (Wikipedia) Mensa-Wood later became Army Commander in 1987 and a member of the PNDC. In 1990, he became Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, succeeding Lieutenant General Arnold Quainoo. He served as CDS until his death in March 1992. (Wikipedia) Then came the question that has sometimes surrounded his death: What actually happened to General Mensa-Wood? The historical record does not establish an assassination or mysterious death. He died on 21 March 1992 at Cromwell Hospital in London, aged 51. Contemporary records cited in biographical accounts identify the cause as pancreatic cancer. He was subsequently buried at the Osu Military Cemetery in Accra.
