CPTSD often develops from the very people who were supposed to protect, nurture, and care for us. For many survivors, those people were parents, caregivers, family members, or other trusted adults. Sometimes the harm came through abuse, manipulation, humiliation, abandonment, or chronic neglect. Sometimes it was intentional. Sometimes it was repeated so often that your nervous system learned that love and safety weren’t the same thing. And unfortunately, it doesn’t always end there. When chaos, inconsistency, neglect, or abuse are what we learn as “love,” we can unknowingly find ourselves drawn to familiar dynamics later in life. Not because we want to be hurt, but because our nervous systems are wired toward what feels familiar. That’s what makes CPTSD so painful and confusing. The people we naturally turn to for comfort can become the source of our fear, hypervigilance, and wounds. Healing often involves learning that love doesn’t have to hurt, safety doesn’t have to be earned, and chaos isn’t the same thing as connection. If you can resonate, you’re not alone 🤍
