Play gives children a remarkably rich environment for practicing attention, working memory, self-control, language, problem-solving, and social skills. 7️⃣ They follow the child's interests deeply. A child who becomes fascinated by insects, maps, machines, music, or rocks isn't wasting time. Sustained interest gives children a reason to ask increasingly sophisticated questions, gather information, notice patterns, and build expertise. Each of these habits creates an environment in which children are constantly thinking. That's what makes an intellectually rich childhood — not a child being stuffed with information, but a child who is encouraged to wonder, investigate, explain, experiment, struggle, and discover. Each of which helps their minds become ever more capable.
