Same applies for a student who is escalating/escalated. They will not retain what you are saying and it could lead to further escalation.

Hey, I learned about this in teacher school! Lol I usually tell students when to take notes "listen to this part and then write these parts down" or "take notes now and I talk when you're done". The only issue is finding small ways to entertain myself while they write.

A little bit off topic, but is there such a thing as a minimum threshold for extrinsic load? I learn best if there are a number of things happening simultaneously. If there is just one thing, my brain feels under-stimulated.

Had a history teacher that wrote notes on the board with blanks in them, gave us time to write all the notes, and then went over them filling in the blanks as he went. It might not work for everyone, but I aced the shit outta that class.

I had a teacher (who bullied me relentlessly physically and mentally) get so so angry at me for not knowing how to make a ‘proper’ slide show because I never made one before. 😭 This post has given me flashbacks to his class in 7th grade. Darn you Rupp for being an amazing educator (and TikTok for throwing this on my FYP when I’m already in the feelings). I love that you’re changing your methods to better the students!

my university bio classes had handouts of all the slides, so we could just annotate during lectures, it was glorious (yes it was the 1900s)

And then post them if they are that important. My kids are good students - my daughter had a masters - but they need to see that again later to double check. My son simply dropped a class bc he couldn’t. Why think it’s important to post once and not again for later??

This is why I use slides with as little info as possible but post up slideshows with all the detail on the class website. I want them writing less from the slides and more from what I’m saying in class.

My slides contain as few words as possible. I use pictures or a couple of words with arrows, or diagrams. The slides cue what I’m going to say, not what they’re going to read.

professors in college who knew that slides and speaking were supposed to work together and not overlap were the best. and making the slides available to print before lecture so I could take notes on the slides? they're the ones whose lessons I still remember years later.

This is why I got a C in my Eastern European history class (first semester freshman year) in college. Also it was a 300 level class and I didn’t know what that meant. But that prof had INSANE slides and wouldn’t share and would talk about context regarding the content of the slides. It was awful.

My students HATED slides 😂 I taught math and they always preferred me just writing everything out on the board. I tried it with everything from Algebra 1 to accelerated Alg 2/Precalc and they ALL said nope to slides 🖥️👎🏼

I’m not a teacher but I have a monthly informational webinar for work and at the beginning, end, and several times in the middle I say “don’t worry I’m sending out the slide deck immediately after the webinar.” I also mention that there’s a Q&A built into the last 15 minutes and we stay on as long as there are questions plus my contact information will be included in the email if they have questions later. Like I know this is a lot of info but I gotchu dawg. 😂

It’s hard - this is my 2nd year and last year I was scolded for not having a specific script to say during the note taking off slides time. This make a a lot more sense though.
