"Uncle Sam's Sickness" (2025) is an editorial spoon inspired by the work of a fellow Stoughton spoon carver from another century. Nearly 130 years ago, Erik Teigen, an immigrant from Norway, kolrosed one of his spoons with illustrations that criticized President Grover Cleveland and the robber barons of the late 19th century (see my previous post for a few images). Teigen specifically addressed Cleveland's 1895 deal with the J.P. Morgan Syndicate, in which U.S. bonds were exchanged for European gold. Although the agreement helped stabilize the economy, it was widely criticized for the substantial profits it yielded to the syndicate. One of Teigen's illustrations, titled "Uncle Sam's Sickness," depicted a sick Uncle Sam being administered a "gold cure." More than a century later, our modern-day robber barons have amassed staggering political power through their extreme wealth and have persuaded many (though not most) to see immigrants, minorities, and folks who are disadvantaged as scapegoats. Needless to say, I believe Teigen would approve of my revival of his spoon's title, used here in the same spirit of holding power to account. With the current regime's actions, it was honestly difficult to choose what to commit to kolrosing. What you see here barely scratches the surface of the issues we face in the United States. "Uncle Sam's Sickness" (2025) will be exhibited from July 11, 2025, through January 11, 2026, at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, lA as part of the special exhibition "Past / Present / Future of Folk Art." #editorialillustration #spooncarving #greenwoodworking #traditionalcraft #kolrosing #stoughtonwisconsin
