Heavy on the first one!! When I started out writing I was terrified of what people would think, and although that sort of worry never went away, sometimes you have to learn that it’s okay to be bad and make mistakes, especially on a first draft!

a tip I find helpful is skipping scenes when you are in a writing flow. if you are on a role then realise the next scene is something you don't know really how to write yet (a character death, a fight scene etc) just write a note like "insert x scene: x finds out y and after fight. character a is wounded" double enter, then just pick up at the next scene. don't risk sucking the fun out of writing by forcing yourself to write a scene your brain hasn't finalised or figured out yet!

I just tell myself the first draft doesn’t matter and I can always fix things up the 2nd and 3rd draft for it to get better and better

I’m a new writer, my first draft is my “trash draft” - a way to get all my thoughts and plot points down with no pressure of good writing. I go through in red with ideas that I haven’t go yet (world building here, expand here) so when I’m actually writing a first proper draft, I have like a script.

also another tip, you don't HAVE to have a certain writing style, as long as its your own then you can do whatever you want with your words, punctuation, etc in your writing ❤️

I completely agree with the first point! It’s the most important thing that blocks beginner writers. I’d like to add that when writing your first draft of your first book, the beginning will become bad the more you progress. Which is good! It’s proof that your evolving. It can be very frustrating because you’ll feel daunted by the fact that the beginning doesn’t hold quality— but don’t get caught up editing as you’re drafting, focus on finishing, and THAN you can tidy up the beginning when your skills lacked!

when I was a beginner and had only characters and a vague plot, I would write short 1-2 page scenes of those characters interacting in scenes I thought might be pivotal points in the story. eg. the widowed main character being approached in a graveyard by the time traveller for the first time and thinking he was pulling a prank on her, or the first time the main character feels her memories remade because they rewrote time. it helped almost story-board my narrative and develop the characters as a duo instead of individuals

What software you use for writing? How do you organise your writing? Do you write only digitally or by hand as well?

The biggest lesson I learnt from writing my first draft of my first adult full length novel was to just push on through. I knew some parts were badly written but if I’d stopped and obsessed over them, I wouldn’t have ever finished it. Now I have that first draft, I can see a way forward to fixing those problems and adding a chapter here or there that fleshes out the story.
