I get it's out of the servers hands but I personally don't like the no substitution rule, I eat out alot with my parents and my dad can't consume any dairy unfortunately so he often has to substitute sides to something he can eat. A rule like that would unfortunately have us leaving so he didn't get sick

Honestly, I would not eat at a “no substitution” restaurant. I’m all good with an upcharge for substitution but not buying a share plate of a side for the table. A smarter way would be to give a choice of vegetable on the dish. Base dish being steak and choose two vegetables to have with it.

People agreeing with the customer are wild! you can leave a restaurant if it’s not allowing you to do what you want to do to enjoy your meal. You don’t order something else eat it then ask not to pay. 🙄

So that is not a great restaurant, no substitutions are silly. I can understand paying for subs especially if it’s a pricier sub. But, that’s not the workers fault. The customer arguing with the server is just silly. Servers don’t make the rules.

These comments are killing me- if you want to swap sides, go to Applebees! Many restaurants do not allow substitutions, especially the nicer ones. And bc of this, they have a proper timing flow and things don’t get messed up.

The people being so astonished/flabbergasted at the no substitution policy are the reasons restaurants have it. As a pervious server I am 💯 on board with this! If you don’t like the way a dish comes don’t order it. Simple. Nothing on the menu (which you can read online before you even step in the restaurant) that you like then go to another establishment. Even simpler.

In most Europe, this doesn't even exist, like wtf, a chef knows better what goes with a dish, like, you cannot let "Karen decide to eat broccoli with fish" for example.
