What the one thing that is holding you back from getting to your goals? Perfectionism? Fear or failure? Fear of judgment? Lack of consistency? I imagine, like most of us, it’s a combination of many things. But how many of us are actually willing to sit down and address the real issue? To learn about ourselves more just in case we might find things we don’t like or make us deeply uncomfortable? Over the last year or so I’ve been really struggling to let go of the two habits that make me my own worst enemy: Perfectionism Fear of Failure Sometimes I get so inside my head, I convince myself that I cant do things and I don’t bother trying.. Back in July I hit my PB in lifting but I only manged two reps not because I couldn’t, but because I gave up. My trainer @fabfitworld kept saying to me “its all on your head, you HAVE got this, you CAN do this. But I didnt believe her. I’d convinced myself I was too weak, not ready and so many other things. But here’s the things, consistency paid off. I tried a few times again, and didnt mange. I failed and failed again and today I managed 6 reps comfortably. Why? Because I let the fear go AND I told myself it didn’t need to be perfect; I just needed to try. . Perfectionism has been drummed into me. Through school, through medical school and through training. Its veiled as having high standards or being great, but actually in chasing perfection, you hold yourself back. Life isnt meant to be perfect, nor are things. They are ALL a work in progress. Pushing for perfection actually stops us from making progress. It creates a cycle of self-doubt, self-criticism and a fear of failure. It causes us much stress, anxiety and is a major motivation killer stopping us from embracing opportunities and learning from things that don’t work . So instead of perfect Im focusing on progress. Progress I’ve achieved through showing up, letting go of my fear and sitting in the discomfort of being ‘good enough’. As Nelson Mandela once said, “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall” #progressoverperfection #perfectionistrecovery #perfectionismisaproblem #perfectionismisoverrated #growthmindset #growthlooksgoodonme
