From the front of the pack, this “breakfast biscuits” product is doing everything it can to convince you it’s a healthy breakfast option — it says “wholegrain,” “source of fibre,” it’s flavoured with yoghurt and honey, and it’s even placed in the cereal bar aisle to make it look like a smart morning choice. But here’s the thing: it should not be marketed as a breakfast option because it’s just a biscuit — and a very ultra-processed one at that! When you actually look at the ingredients, it’s full of sugar, glucose syrup, glycerol, and many unnecessary additives for a biscuit!! And has a sugar content of 23% so for the serving of 2 biscuits for breakfast that they recommend it’s 3 teaspoons of sugar! If I was going to choose to have a biscuit for breakfast I’d prefer to go for the shortbread fingers! This product is found in the biscuit aisle and is not pretending to be a health biscuit! And it’s much better quality… It’s made using only the ingredients you’d use if making shortbread at home yourself so is minimally processed, and for two of these biscuits it’s 1/3rd of the amount of sugar as the “breakfast biscuits” This is such a good example of how packaging and supermarket placement can lead us to believe we’re making better choices than we are. If we want to make fully informed choices as to what we’re buying, we cannot rely on the front of pack. We have to flip it over and read the ingredients list and nutritional information. Only then can we truly understand what it is we’re buying. #misleadinglabels #sophiesswaps #foodlabels
