Rain doesn’t mean groundwater. We have this tendency to see a big storm roll through, watch water pouring down the streets, filling gutters and swelling creeks, and think nature just refilled the tank. It didn’t. Even with an unconfined aquifer, where precipitation can move downward from the surface and eventually reach the water table, only a fraction of the water that falls from the sky actually makes it there. In many places, less than 10% of precipitation may become groundwater recharge. The rest has a very different journey. Some evaporates almost immediately. Some gets intercepted by plants and eventually returned to the atmosphere through transpiration. Some stays trapped as shallow soil moisture. And a tremendous amount can simply run across the surface into storm drains, creeks, rivers, and eventually downstream. That’s what makes groundwater recharge so interesting. It isn’t just about how much rain falls. It’s about what happens to the water after it hits the ground. Healthy soil slows it down, vegetation holds it, wetlands spread it out, floodplains give rivers room to linger. Permeable sand and gravel can provide pathways downward. Concrete does almost the exact opposite. We’ve spent generations engineering landscapes to move water away as quickly as possible, then wondered why groundwater levels decline and wells have to reach deeper. If we want more water underground, sometimes the answer isn’t finding more water. It’s giving the water we already have more time to soak in. Because aquifers can refill one drop at a time. We drain them by the gallon. #water #h20 #aqua #rain moisture
