A friend of mine went for a routine mammogram. She felt completely fine.No lump.No pain.No symptoms. And she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her cancer is sitting behind the nipple. It cannot be felt from the outside. She did nothing wrong and she didn’t miss any signs. There were no signs. This is the part many women misunderstand. Self checking your breasts is important but self checking and screening are not the same thing. Some breast cancers grow in a way you can feel. Some grow silently inside the ducts and the only way they are found is on a mammogram. My friend did not go because she thought she had cancer. She went because it was a routine screen. Because she went, she now has a treatment plan and doctors who know exactly what they are dealing with. In the UK you will be invited for screening between 50 and 71, every three years. If your letter comes, please don’t put it in a drawer. Please don’t delay because you feel busy, or embarrassed, or scared. You can feel completely healthy and still have breast cancer. Screening finds what fingers can’t. If you are over 50, book it. If you missed your appointment, rebook it. If you have been meaning to, this is your nudge. This is not a panic post. It is a prevention post. And today it is written for one woman who almost didn’t go. And because I know brave women going through treatment that don’t have this platform and want to share the message far and wide to remind people to check your breasts, go for the screenings and make sure you prioritise your health. #viralvideos #fyp #WomenSupportingWomen #midlifewoman #menopause
