Copper can help control the algae, but it’s pretty hard to maintain the right level if you’re just relying on copper leaching into the water, because you don’t really know how much is dissolving or how much is still active. River water can also have heaps of phosphates, organic matter and sediment, which can encourage algae growth and bind up some of the copper. But honestly, if you’re only storing it to water the gardens, I wouldn’t worry too much about the algae unless it’s causing issues with the tank or pump.
