Borders believed the illness was connected to the toxic dust she had inhaled on 9/11, although a direct causal link in her individual case was not established publicly. What is known is that the dust generated by the World Trade Center collapse contained hazardous substances, and decades of research have documented serious illnesses among people exposed to the disaster and its aftermath. The CDC's World Trade Center Health Program includes cancers among recognized WTC-related conditions, with stomach cancer specifically included on its official list. Twenty-five years later, Borders' photograph remains a haunting reminder that the consequences of September 11 did not end when the dust settled.
