@Deutsche Grammophon - DG Last March I was invited to play a show together with Maarten Vos in Seoul. It was during the period I had planned to work on new music. The dominant narrative of the news and the overwhelming sadness had taken control over my mind and body and I couldn’t see myself working on anything new let alone see a path to finding something remotely beautiful or meaningful. I was looking for ways to express my anxiety and deep rage and what came out, if anything, was utterly dark and negative. It felt like I was only making things worse. Then we went to visit the exhibition of Pierre Huyghe at the Leeum Museum of Art entitled Liminal. The experience was profound, frightening and comforting at the same time. We are on the verge of something immense, we all feel it, it is impossible not to. Change often comes with fear and resistance. But how should we relate to the uncertainty of not knowing? Huyghe’s Liminal let us experience a dialogue between sentients, inert matter, technology and biology and glanses a future in which we might come to live and adapt. It was so refreshing to be in his heterotopia where humans are not at the center of existence. It made the humble role we play very tangible and this triggered the inspiration for me to get to work. I knew I had to borrow the title for my album as it encapsulates our times and my emotions so well. Back home it was Iris van Herpen who recommended me to read Wild Renaissance, a book by Guillaume Logé. This book turned out to be crucial for the rest of the process of making the new record. Today we announce the launch of the album Liminal, planned for release on March 20th of next year, with the release of a first song. The title of which I found in Guillaume Logé’s book. It’s called: “We are here but to make music an dance with all the obtaining forces”. I can’t wait to share the rest of the music with you. Much love joep
