James Potter was the "switch" that made Severus go to the Dark Lord. Snape endured it all when he was an emotional child (hense the nickname "Snivellus", 'cause he'd cry a lot) and James used his own spells against him. It wasn't just two guys fighting, it was one against 4 all the time. I do not understand how can people like the Marauders. Truly. If there ever was a movie/book/anything that could tell their story, yeah, they'd be the nice ones because they were animagus to support their werewolf friend, but that's about it. There isn't anything else they've done "good".
