Collecting Americana…yellowware. I’m back with another one of my collections. You’ve seen my Yellowware collection in my piesafe in my studio….but now learn a bit more about this form of pottery. #collecting #americana #pottery Before mass-produced ceramics and shiny porcelain, there was yellowware. It all started in England in the late 1700s, where potters in Staffordshire discovered a rich, iron-tinted clay. When fired, it turned a warm yellow color that became instantly popular. Durable, affordable, and beautiful in its simplicity. By the 1820s, that same craft crossed the Atlantic. In places like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, American potters found their own yellow clay and began producing bowls, crocks, and pitchers by the thousands. Each piece was coated in a clear glaze, giving it that signature glossy finish. Farmers mixed bread dough in it. Families stored milk in it. It was rather humble in most of its uses. It was the pottery of daily life. By the mid-1800s, potters added colorful bands and stripes, turning plain kitchenware into collectible pieces. But by the 1930s, yellowware began to fade away and was replaced by porcelain, ironstone, and eventually glass and plastic.
