There, on the sinuous curves of the Transfăgărășan, where the mountains claw at the sky and the mist clings like an unspoken secret, the great Carpathian bears have learned a new trick—begging. No longer phantoms of the deep forest, they shuffle on hind legs, swaying like grotesque marionettes for a crust of bread, a chocolate bar, a moment’s amusement. What was once the apex predator of these lands, a creature of power and solitude, is now reduced to a roadside sideshow, a circus act without the dignity of a tent. This is not coexistence. This is corruption. The great bear, sovereign of Europe’s last wild frontier, is now a panhandler, seduced by the easy, hollow generosity of passing tourists. A bear that learns to dance for food forgets how to hunt. It forgets the ancient rhythms of the forest, the patience of the stalk, the hunger that hones its instincts. And when hunger finally reawakens, it will not distinguish between a plastic-wrapped sandwich and the trembling hand that holds it. Then come the calls, the complaints, the bullets. A fed bear is a dead bear, they say. And yet, here we are, feeding them still. So what do we truly seek when we roll down our windows to these beggars of the wild? A fleeting thrill? A story to tell over coffee? The illusion that we, in our arrogance, can tame the untamable? The bear dances now, but at what cost? One day, the music will stop. What happens then?
