Of Chinese origin (11th century) and widely used since the early 19th century, banknotes are printed on thin coated paper that is highly resistant to ageing and handling. They usually feature a watermark and are made exclusively from highly refined cotton rag pulp. The first banknotes were printed using wood engraving techniques: the matrices were made of hardwood. From the 15th century onwards, metal engravings began to be used, as they were much more resistant than wood. From the 19th century onwards, techniques were modernised to make banknotes increasingly difficult for counterfeiters to copy. In Europe, the first banknotes issued by a banking institution (in the strict sense) appeared in the early 17th century with the Bank of Stockholm (Riksbank). It was not until the Banque de France issued its first banknotes around 1800 that France entered the era of modern banknotes, but it was not until the middle of the Second Empire that banknotes really came into common use. From 1776 onwards, the United States issued banknotes, the Continental dollar, which was square in shape, designed by Benjamin Franklin and used a complex engraving system representing tree leaf prints. #microscope #Banknotes #PaperMoney #numismatics
