@chinaresearchinsights: Can AI still detect AI? AI-generated images are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from real photographs. But there is another problem: what happens when an AI image detector itself is attacked? In this episode of China Research Insights, we explore a recent research study on robust AI-generated image detection under adversarial attacks. The researchers identify a fundamental problem with conventional adversarial training: instead of simply making a detector more robust, adversarial examples can cause clean and adversarial features to become entangled, potentially reducing the detector's ability to distinguish between real and AI-generated images. The study proposes a different approach: an Adversarial Mixture-of-Experts Post-Training Mechanism. Instead of retraining the entire backbone network, the method keeps the original feature extractor frozen and introduces multiple specialized experts. A gating network dynamically determines which experts should respond to different types of adversarial attacks. The experiments evaluate the method against attacks including PGD, APGD, C&W, FAB, Square Attack, and AutoAttack, using detectors such as CNNSpot, GramNet, NPR, UnivFD, RINE, and Effort. One of the most striking results comes from the ProGAN experiments: the proposed method achieves an average robust accuracy of 81.31% on UnivFD, compared with 21.45% for the vanilla detector. But the method is not invincible. The researchers also find that strong adaptive white-box attacks can still shift features toward overlapping regions of the representation space. So the bigger question is not simply: “Can AI detect AI?” It is: “Can an AI detector remain reliable when another AI is actively trying to fool it?” This episode examines the problem, the proposed solution, the experimental evidence, and the remaining limitations.
