The story comes from Mansa Musa, emperor of Mali. While visiting Cairo in the 14th century, Musa reportedly explained how he became emperor. According to the account, his predecessor became obsessed with discovering what lay beyond the Atlantic. The ruler first sent an expedition westward. Only one vessel reportedly returned. Then he organized a much larger expedition, appointed Musa to govern in his absence, and personally sailed into the Atlantic. He never returned. Later tradition often identifies this mysterious ruler as Abu Bakr II (Abubakari II) and proposes an extraordinary possibility: Could Malians have reached the Americas almost two centuries before Columbus? Some writers believe they did. But historians have never found conclusive archaeological, genetic, or documentary evidence demonstrating that the Malian expedition reached the Americas.
