South Africa is strengthening its maritime industry by building and maintaining naval vessels locally, reducing reliance on foreign shipyards while creating opportunities for local manufacturers and skilled workers.Under Project Biro, Damen Shipyards Cape Town completed three 62-metre Multi-Mission Inshore Patrol Vessels for the South African Navy. The final vessel was delivered in May 2025, with more than 60% of procurement and components sourced from local suppliers. The country is also constructing its largest domestic naval vessel in decades under Project Hotel. The SAS Nelson Mandela (A187) is being built by Sandock Austral Shipyards in Durban as a modern hydrographic survey vessel designed to map the seabed, support navigation and conduct marine research.As of 2026, the Project Hotel vessel is reportedly around 60% complete, although construction has faced contractual, labour and weather-related delays. South Africa is also investing in the refurbishment of its existing fleet, including submarine and frigate sustainment programmes at the Armscor Naval Dockyard in Simon’s Town.
